It was a lovely sunshine day with temperatures over 20 degrees as the game started around 12:00, excitement was high and the crowd expected some running rugby from both sides as the sides took the field for one last time in 2017.
Both sides had opportunities early on to run and test the opposition defence and it took around 5 minutes before Paarl Gimnasium crossed the line. There were some great moments in the game where the ball handling was just sublime, but for the majority of the match it was stop and go. Lonchnerhof had injuries every 5 minutes and the medical team was busy running up and down to assist.
Paarl Gimnasium were penalised roughly more than 20 times during the match and only received one penalty in their favour for the entire match. This is very questionable when taking into consideration that they were doing most of the attacking during the 50 minutes. One could also ask how it is possible for a team under that amount of pressure like Lochnerhofwas to only make 1 mistake in their discipline.
The boys from Paarl did not have their best performance of the year, but it is understandable seeing that they just finished their Intershools match against Paarl Boishaai with a 44 point victory. They did still manage to score 50 points with a team boasting 6 grade six students in the starting line-up against a well-coached Lochnerhof side full of determination.
Lochnerhof impressed with their forwards running PD’s and standoffs and gained good momentum every time they had an opportunity, but found themselves under the poles almost every time Gim unleashed their dangerous backline. Lochnerhof did score a late try in the match to make the score look a little bit more respectable.
Final score then Paarl Gimnasium 50 and Lochnerhof 26. What a season this was for Gimnasium and they will now play in a 7’s tournament this Friday before all ends for this year and the boys can start showing their cricket skills.
